Ecommerce website design explained

Three pillars of great ecommerce website design.

Your ecommerce website is more than just a shop window. It’s your hardest-working salesperson, your brand’s digital home, and often the first place a customer truly experiences what you’re about. But in a world of shrinking attention spans and infinite choices, a "good enough" site simply doesn't cut it anymore.

It’s not just about moving products; it’s about building a digital experience that converts and retains. Retention is your business's hidden superpower for long-term loyalty. Here are the three pillars we use at Yoyo to create ecommerce experiences that stick:

1. Friction is the enemy of conversion

We’ve all been there. You find the perfect product, hit 'Buy Now', and then... a wall. Forced account creation, a convoluted checkout, or buttons that don’t quite work on mobile. Great ecommerce design is invisible. It’s the seamless flow of someone landing on your homepage to then viewing a thank-you page based on the product they’ve just bought.

To win, you need to ruthlessly remove every hurdle. This means lightning-fast load times, intuitive navigation, and a checkout process so simple it feels like second nature. It’s about anticipating the user's next move before they even make it. If your user has to stop and think about how to buy, you’ve already lost them to a competitor who made it easier.

2. A data-driven user experience (UX) is key

A data-driven approach isn't a death sentence for creativity. You don't need to stick to a generic grid to convert; in fact, the most memorable brands break the mould with purposeful micro-interactions and stunning imagery that encourage users to convert and purchase.

However, the secret sauce to finding what solution works best for your audience is validation. When every creative choice is backed by user data, you stop guessing and start building a selling machine that actually performs.

To get started, here are four key areas we recommend to gather insight from:

Schedule user interviews

This is pure UX gold. Organise and plan user interviews to gather valuable qualitative insight into your users' motivations, goals and pain points.

Review web analytics

Use a tool like Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to track traffic, bounce rates, and conversions to identify opportunities for experimentation. If you don’t have this set up, do it now.

Install heatmap tooling

Tools like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity help reveal real-world behaviour through click and heatmaps. We recommend capturing at least three months of data to account for seasonal trends, like the January surge for fitness brands.

Conduct A/B Testing

Compare two variants of a UI element, section or piece of content (A and B) to determine which converts better. You’ll either improve or learn, either way, you win.

3. Mobile shouldn't be secondary

If you aren't designing for the thumb, you aren't designing for the modern consumer. With the majority of ecommerce traffic now coming from mobile devices, your site needs to do more than just "work" on a phone; it needs to excel. This means optimising for purchases made while the user is distracted or on the move.

Mobile-first design isn’t just about making things smaller. It’s about considering the prioritisation of information and ensuring context is kept intact across devices. This could mean ensuring touch targets are easy to hit within "the thumb zone" or stripping away non-essential clutter without removing the core experience. A truly responsive site adapts to the user’s context, providing the best experience whether they’re on a desktop at work or a smartphone on a busy train.
