Delivering climate positive projects

For every website Yoyo launch, we’ve committed to plant 1,000 trees and fund projects around the globe that will remove the equivalent of 20 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere.


We’re either in the midst of a climate crisis or a climate emergency, depending on how dramatic the journalist is feeling when you ask them.

The UN didn’t think either option was sufficiently anxiety-inducing and has settled for declaring that we have 11 years to avert a climate catastrophe.

However you frame it, the outlook isn’t good. 

As individuals, we can take action to mitigate our impact. There’s growing evidence that the wider public are doing so, becoming more aware of their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment. Perhaps more crucially - large numbers of the public are adapting their purchasing patterns accordingly, seeking out businesses that align with their beliefs. 

The numbers are persuasive.

73% of surveyed individuals are willing to change their consumption habits to limit their impact and 81% feel strongly that businesses have a role to play in protecting the environment.

When businesses adapt their processes and outlook to better serve these climate-conscious individuals, real change and impact can be made.

As a certified B Corporation, we’ve been championing this approach and seeking a way to best assist our clients to minimise their impact on the environment. 

We think we’ve found it.


Climate positive websites are websites that remove more CO₂ from the atmosphere than they put in. 

So, how will we do this?

  • For every website we launch, we plant 1,000 trees in the name of our client.
  • For every website we build, we fund projects around the globe that remove 20 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere -  a diverse range of initiatives from wind farms, forestry protection, to hydropower projects.

Why 20 tonnes?

We used various calculators to work out the yearly impact of our most asset and traffic-heavy sites, then multiplied by a factor of ten to give us the confidence that our websites will be climate positive for the first five years. 

We’ve chosen our partner carefully.

It was important that we teamed up with an organisation that would deliver this in the right way.

Ecologi ensure their projects and tree planting initiatives are delivered to the certified gold standard, giving both Yoyo and our clients the confidence that the work will be carried out ethically and responsibly, by ensuring local people gain sustainable livelihoods and that the habitats of local wildlife are respected. 

Excitingly, you can already see a visual representation of the impact Yoyo is having here. We’ve backdated this for all project launches in 2020, covering all of our time as a certified B corporation. 


Just the first step of many

Offsetting and tree planting are no magic bullet to solving climate change but they are a statement of intent. As more individuals and businesses adopt this approach, the proverbial snowball grows and gains momentum. We’re proud to be one of the early adopters and we’re excited to share the benefit with our clients. 

Further initiatives are on the way including the launch of green hosting services, giving Yoyo more oversight and control over the impact of our websites. More on that to come. 

I’ll leave you with this prediction from our CEO, Jenny Kitchen as an indication of what you can expect from Yoyo over the next few years:

Our prediction for the future is that the pandemic will help to speed up the trend for more sustainable businesses exponentially. All companies won’t become B Corporations, but those that don’t consider the impact of their decisions on people and the environment will become obsolete. Employees and customers will simply demand it.
